Reading a couple of stories on business-ethics.com as suggested by our Learning Journal assignment this week and to select one to write and analyze, the story about John Mackey a co-founder of Whole Foods Market stood out to me. Business ethics as Gruble writes is based on the values and codes of the company and can be written or unwritten and what is good or wrong is depending on the companies attitude and culture and applies to every level of the company (2011). I would certainly think that a co-founder of such a big company like Whole Foods Market personal association’s in private and public is very important in aspect in showing what his personal views of the world are, the headline “Spotlight on Whole Foods CEO’s Ties to ‘Spiritual Leader …show more content…
He should also actively reach out to all the non-profits out there that tries to help victims of sexual exploitations and especially those that deals with minors, he would therefore actively practice Corporate Social responsibility and do the society good and put the company in positive light. Mackey should either kick Gafni out of the “Center for Integral Wisdom” group or leave and start another one if Gafni refuses, because any association with Gafni will hurt his credibility and his cause of Conscious Capitalism. All these actions will surely maintain or even increase business, which is one of the benefits of practicing social responsibility and stake-holders business …show more content…
It shows how important personal ethics are and how they are sometimes intertwined with business ethics, especially when you are the head of the company that sets the tone throughout the company. Although Mackey claims and it might be true that Gafni has no control or say over his decisions related to the company processes, the perception that is projected by him refusing to cut ties with Gafni is a powerful one of approval of Gafni sexual misdeeds and hurts and distracts the company’s message of Conscious Capitalism and even profit margins. There many steps Mackey can do to fix this ethical business dilemma and even practice some Corporate Social responsibility

John Mackey, cofounder and co-chief executive officer of Whole Foods Market, and Thurman John Rodgers, founder and chief executive officer of Cypress Semiconductor, both successful businessmen, but have very different views on their responsibility to their stakeholders.
