Buscaglia On Parenting

Leo Buscaglia, an author and motivational speaker, once said, “It's not enough to have lived. We should be determined to live for something. May I suggest that it be creating joy for others, sharing what we have for the betterment of person-kind, bringing hope to the lost and love to the lonely.” Ever since a child, I grew up believing that one story can have an impact in your whole life, overtime a part of my childhood’s happiness came from reading many stories about people who didn't have nothing at first but grew to be one of the most successful people in this world. Stories were my escape, a distraction from what reality looked like, from the poor environment I lived in and that was just the beginning. I grew up with younger siblings that were in the cry for parenting, my …show more content…
Although I still had no experience on how to help myself first, at that moment there wasn’t second thoughts of serving others first before myself. Both of my parents came from Mexico, which leaves me, a proud Mexican-American. I had my sisters along with me during the ride of my life, to realizing the strength and change one story can have. It all started at a young age, my parents had told me many stories from their past and their childhood, as they would call in their language, “los cuentos de mi Vida," the stories of my life. My parent’s stories included how every day in Mexico they would wake up as early as five, walk miles to feed their livestock to support my grandparents in any way the could. At that moment, I realized that I wanted to make a living through these stories, it was motivating and inspiring to know how people who are less fortunate than others pick themselves up at one point when they are weak and at their own knees in the search of hope. Through this journey, I learned that I am the owner of my future. My own story began with others stories

In my earlier years, I was largely inspired by Christopher McCandless, or known by his moniker as Alexander Supertramp. His story portrayed in the book and the movie Into the Wild speaks volume to me. It shaped my perception of living as I find myself going through phases in life. A similar figure that inspire me is Henry David Thoreau. In his book, Walden, he wrote, “most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts of life are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind.”…

A Reflection: The Danger of a Single Story As most people, my story consists of an abundance of struggle, trial and error, and also lessons. These challenges, in addition to the lessons, have brought upon stress, anxiety, and even depression into my life. They have made me question myself to the point of insanity, avoid meeting and accepting new people into my life, and even fail to uphold the bonds I had previously made with both relatives and peers. However, I cannot be defined and bound to the “single story” of my anxiety. There are many more complex stories that represent me even more adequately than the ones that correspond to the struggles I’ve faced; as there are many more stories significant to other various people, places and things…

Across the Oceans “Don’t ever forget where you came from; otherwise, you’ll never remember where you’re going.” Leaving my thirteen years behind, I flew away from Nepal in 2013 in a hope that I’ll prove myself in the future fulfilling the dreams that I dreamed as a child. Flying away felt like leaving a piece of myself in the place where I spent my whole childhood for the place where I was going to spend my adolescence and my adulthood. I came from a place where the lack of electricity, water sources, transportation, employment, and health service still exist. Being born in a place where my dad spent his childhood and adulthood struggling to get a proper meal for a day makes me think how lucky I was to get to come to the place where it lacks nothing.…

I think one of the reasons why this opportunity is so important to me is because I have always had this drive to help people. My dad came to America from Mexico when he was in his early twenties. He left his parents and his 13 siblings in hopes to get a good paying job in America so he could send them money. Often times in the media and politics, there is a criminalization of immigrants and their intentions. All my dad wanted to do is provide for his family and make their lives easier.…

As an eighth grader, I had no choice but to balance out my school work, making sure to do all the chores, and taking care of my three younger siblings at home by myself. My parents would be up in the hospital taking care of my now passed grandmother, who had cancer, while I, being the oldest child in the family, had to stay home alone to take care of my younger siblings. At first it was a difficult task for my 12-year old self to handle. While I was doing my homework or studying, I would have to stop what I was doing and help my siblings on their homework. Another scenario would be me cleaning up the house, even though there were homework waiting for me on the table.…
