The old saying, “nothing is for free” resonates when the user is faced with endangerment or getting fired because of some inappropriate photo, of him or herself on vacation. The social network sites privacy setting is “opt out” assumes the user wants the whole world to see his or her personal info. Until the user tells it differently, information is at risk until the user adjusts the settings of the site (Veer, …show more content…
Not only does the user have to control the content and privacy setting on his or her page, they have to control their friend’s page. If you connect with say 100 friends on the social site and they can access your pictures, comments and anyone decides to download an application, the creator of the application has most of your information and can target you.
The scary part of this conundrum is it gets permission from your friend and not you. Therefore, you really should not share anything with friends on the social network sites. You can use your privacy settings (Facebook, 2010) to “limit which friends can access your information, or limit which of your information is available to everyone. You can disconnect from a friend if you are uncomfortable with how they are using your information” (Facebook, 2010).
