Initially, when the two drugs Espirir and Retrovir that were discovered by Glaxo succeeded in treating some cases of AIDS, their demand increased drastically across the globe. Such a drastic increment in demand of those drugs reduced the amount of inventories of the two drugs in the various pharmacies. So, Glaxo was required to produce and ship them rapidly, but the accurate demand of the drugs, forecasting of shipments, and inventory levels was hard to estimate.
