After taking my first bite into the succulent masterpiece, I realized something was wrong. There was a certain flavor I had never tasted before. At the moment, I did not know what the intruder was, and I was definitely thrown off because this was not the perfect burrito that I had become accustomed to. Tomatoes. “Clearly my dad must have been out of his mind when placing this order for me,” I thought. Initially, I tried to pick through the burrito to remove the trespasser, but this proved to be too meticulous of a task. So, I surrendered. After the initial trauma wore off, I realized that although the taste may be different, a new level of diversity and variety was added to my burrito. “Do I like tomatoes?” Did I really just ask that question? I have always said “no tomato” for everything. But it was different this time. Could I have been wrong? If I were wrong about tomatoes, I wonder what else could I be wrong about. This gave me a new curiosity to try different ingredients, and it showed me that each individual ingredient enriches the overall flavor of the burrito. …show more content…
Like me, pre-tomatoes, people believe that their own burrito is perfect; they are stubborn to change because they have become grounded in their ways as well as comfortable with their uniformity. A burrito is like a cultural community, whether it is race, religion, or ethnicity, people in each community are wary to accept new “ingredients,” or people in their group. The people in these communities are scared that the new “ingredients” will interfere will the uniform nature of society, just as I was with my burrito. This experience of taking a chance with the new ingredient showed me that in society new people add diversity and enrich the lives of others around us.
