Since the beginning of recorded history, man has been telling grand adventure stories; exciting tales of heroes defeating enemies, seeking treasure, and experiencing perilous tribulations. “The Odyssey”, by the Greek poet Homer, is one of the most famous epics to date. It follows the adventures of the Greek king, Odysseus, as he travels through the Mediterranean, trying to return home. The protagonist of an epic is called the “epic hero”, and he must exhibit certain characteristics to fulfill this title: he must represent the values of his culture, be either aided or hindered by the gods, and demonstrate one or more character flaws. Because he meets all three criteria, Odysseus can be considered the definitive epic hero.…

In the epic genre of storytelling there are two character archetypes that represent a civilization’s view of the unquestionably good and evil. The unquestionably ‘good’ archetype is that of the ‘Hero’ character who is representative of a civilization's values and ideas. This hero is the wholly just, fearless, and godly man which every human strives to emulate. The other archetype is that of the unquestionably ‘evil’ character who represents the ideas or forces that exists to undermine everything that a civilization holds dear. We always expect the hero in a story to be the main character-it makes sense. Most books, TV shows and movies follow this formula, although there’s an important exception. This exception is a book written 5,000 years ago, The Epic of Gilgamesh translated by Stephen Mitchell. The two main characters in this story are half-god half-humans: Gilgamesh and Enkidu. In the book, the king of Uruk is Gilgamesh, and he rules and terrorizes the many people who are under his rule.…

The tale of a hero is one of the most classic of stories, told in various forms throughout the ages. Every hero, classical and modern, has different strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that they demonstrate and face along the way, exhibiting traits that prove them a hero. While there is no doubt that the central figures of the Greek myths of Perseus, Hercules, and Atalanta are all heroes, Hercules, strong both in will and physically, stands as the best example of a classic hero. Heroes are not made without challenges, some of which they face early on in their journey. Hercules and Atalanta meet their first struggle as children, with the goddess Hera sending the former “two great snakes [that] came crawling into the nursery” (Hamilton 228), which Hercules promptly kills, and the latter being “left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger” (Hamilton 246) by her father.…

Three Heroes of Ancient Literature After approximately seven hundred years of Greek and Roman literature, the heroes of legends and myths both remained strong figures struggling through life as well as characters that also revealed the changing cultures of the ancient Mycenaean Greeks, the Golden Age of Athens and the Roman Empire. The lone figure swimming against the waves of pain and lost love remains the same in these stories, but the roles of the gods and the ability of the hero at the heart of the stories change. The great male heroes of Homer and Virgil stand strong and can match cleverness or piety with the strength of the imperfect gods. Sophocles tells us of a tragic hero who, as a female, cannot overcome the power of men in the kingdoms…
