The ban the burqa article is a short piece of writing that clearly opposes the beliefs of a number of Australian politicians. The article is divided in to three main parts, each focusing on a different argument against banning the Burqa and Niqab. In this piece I would like to express my views as a citizen of Australia as well as discuss arguments for and against the motion.
The piece opens with a very bold statement: “The burqa and niquab are often viewed as symbols of extremism”. As much as I agree with this statement, I do not believe that the burqa or niquab are linked with extremism. This legislation states that full face coverings are not allowed to be worn in public places without a reasonable excuse. According to the bill, without limitation, it is a reasonable excuse if the covering is in lawful pursuit of a person’s occupation or is being used in lawful entertainment, recreation or sport. The phrase “without limitation” indicates that the bill is not trying to define all the circumstances which may be a reasonable excuse. This give the court the decision of if the excuse was reasonable. However, a clause states that a person’s religious or cultural belief does not count as a reasonable excuse for wearing a full face covering. It is true that the bill was designed to target Islamic face veils but the law states that it is an offence to threaten another person in to wearing a full face covering, showing that the law seeks to protect women’s rights.
