A pragmatic randomized controlled study of 68 health care workers (43 intervention, 25 control) in Spain. The article conducted pre- and post-intervention assessments to evaluate the efficacy of an 8 week mindfulness education program in reducing worker burnout. The study found that burnout rates were modestly reduced in the intervention group when compared to the control group, which did not receive …show more content…
The intervention group had eight, 3 hour sessions over a 4 month period, to propose solutions for reducing adverse workplace factors. Three years later, there was a modest decrease in burnout in the intervention arm as opposed to the control arm. A major limitation of the article was the organizational changes that occurred within the hospitals were not under the study’s control. Furthermore, there was no blinding of participants in the study, which opened way for potential Hawthorne effects that could have resulted in an information bias.

A posttest-only cluster randomized controlled trial consisting of 581 participants (346 intervention, 235 control) in Belgian acute hospitals tested a 4 month care pathway (CP) intervention and its effects on employee burnout. The article measured burnout using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory. The study showed a moderate improvement in burnout risk in the experimental group when compared against the control group. Limitations of study included participant self-reporting, loss of 7 teams from the study, and lack of a baseline pre-intervention
