After the fire, Green’s life was a mess, she didn’t care for the garden, one of the only places where she felt like she could be who she was, and then she even let the looters destroy it. Then, she started to transform herself into a whole other person, a person with tattoos covering her body, a person with clothes covered by thorns, a person who was fearful of herself. She wanted to look so scary, so fearful, that nobody would ever disrespect her again. That was until love found her, it was love that healed her from her wounds, it was love that liberated her from her sorrow, and it was love that conquered the fear that resided in her. One of the main ways Alice Hoffman used to demonstrate the theme was by using the plot of the story.…

Joseph Campbell studied ancient greek mythology. After studying, the American Mythologist, Writer, and Lecturer, discovered that heroes in almost every story follow this same path called the Heroic Journey. He figured this out by seeing that all the heroes go through stages. For example, they refuse, they have tests/allies/enemies, and they are rewarded at the end of their journey. The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…

The way Baldwin describes the aggravation felt by all African Americans during this time period made me feel like I was personally experiencing it with them. From the financial and social hardships they faced, it was never an easy life for people of color. If it was not for the many lives risked and lost for their equality, America would not be where we are today.…

According to the Judge in “A Spark Neglected Burns the House” by Leo Tolstoy, “the first of all laws is to obey God” and God said, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself,” which means you should treat your neighbor as you would yourself (Tolstoy 91; Matthew 22:38-40 KJV). In this essay, I am going to pose the question whether or not society as a whole would be better if we followed Gods law as opposed to following the court law. My position on this argument is that we would, as a society, be better off if we followed Gods law, better known as the Ten Commandments. To prove why my position is better than the opposing position I will use Tolstoy’s “A Spark Neglected Burns the House” to argue how bringing personal matters to the court only makes…
