Burkas Research Paper

The context, Muzhgan, is one in which countries around the world are taking steps to bar people from wearing the burkas.

Egypt may well have been amongst the first countries to actually legislate on the issue, more for reasons of secular values than anything else, but various other countries have recently followed (for reasons including both secularism, security and identification - the reasons now being used in "Harper's rampage").

The most famous case is of course France. They started legislating on this issue over a decade ago and today burqas and niqabs are banned throughout the country. Belgium, yet another socialist country with a left-wing government, also banned them four years ago. Swiss Cantons, and Spanish cities (including ones as diverse and cosmopolitan as Barcelona) have also taken the same moves.

Theres also the Liberal government in Quebec, which has proposed legislation to ban niqabs and burkas from the public sector. But they're Liberal, utterly beyond any accusations such as those levelled at Harper. In fact, many of the very same people who are accusing Harper of bigotry and xenophobia, are voting Liberal this month.

This is the context. Harper is not taking any new or novel steps. Nothing that the likes of Turkey didn't do decades

The Qur’an, an Islamic holy text, often states that it is a religion of peace and charity, and, until recently, violence in the name of the faith was quite isolated. As an anonymous member of Reddit’s r/Islam community states, “though Islam is a peaceful religion, not all Muslims support peace.” One of those few was Osama bin Laden, commonly known as America’s prime adversary. He and his organization, Al Qaeda, took responsibility for atrocities committed against the American people, atrocities like the September 11th attacks, one of the nation’s darkest days. However, in the 1970’s and 80’s, the United States itself funded bin Laden and his colleagues.…

Torture as an Anti-Terrorist Strategy In 2005, the Detainee Treatment act was passed, which banned the military from engaging in torture as well as requiring the International Committee of the Red Cross to have access to prisoners being held by the U.S. government. In June of 2015, Senate voted to expand this law to prevent the military and all other government agencies from using torture during interrogations of prisoners, codifying a ban President Barack Obama issued by executive order shortly after he was sworn in. The use of torture has been a hot topic for the past several years, mainly because of its use by the Bush administration and the intelligence gained through torture eventually leading us to finding Osama Bin Laden.
