A Buried Spectacle
Every other year, my family and I travel to Chicago to visit with my uncle and his family. While we have our normal traditions, like eating deep dish pizza, we are always searching for new and interesting places to visit. During our last visit, our parents offered my sisters and me an unusual and unique experience. After spending the day at the Chicago Botanical Gardens, we drove to Ahlgrim Family Funeral Services, which is a funeral home in Palatine, Illinois. Undoubtedly, my sisters and I were extremely confused about why we were at a funeral home at six o’clock at night on our vacation. After laughing, our parents explained that the funeral home had a miniature golf course in the basement, which was available to play when no other funeral services were active. Since our parents are known pranksters, we took this with a grain of salt and proceeded inside. After introducing ourselves to the funeral director, he told us a

While my sisters and I were not ready to leave, we agreed it was time because we had completed everything that was available within the room. My parents asked the funeral director to take a couple of pictures of us so we could prove to our family and friends that Ahlgrim Acres actually existed. The pure disbelief from anyone we sent the pictures to was astounding and quite a few of our friends and family thought the entire idea behind the course was extremely morbid. As we left, my family thanked the funeral director for letting us enjoy the amazing Ahlgrim Acres. The funeral director thanked us for coming and told us to send anyone this way that would also enjoy the experience. My sister said that she had plenty of friends already marking this place on their lists of places to visit. When my family reached the hotel, we immediately went to our grandparent’s room to tell them about this once in a lifetime

Over summer I went with some friends to the Johnson Shut-ins in Missouri. It was the first time I went camping in years and it was one of the coolest trips I’ve ever been on. It started with the drive which was about two and a half hours through isolated roads which eventually got kind of creepy because we were in the middle of nowhere, every house had confederate flags posted, and we were running out of gas. We finally found the place and found our campground and we wanted to find out what the shut-ins were exactly. It was on the other side of the campground…

Dr. Shipman had one of the best guises a serial killer could expect to have. He was a family doctor, a pillar of society, respected by his colleagues and patients (England, 2015). This, on its face value made it inconceivable that he could be responsible for murdering so many people. When suspicions first arose that something criminal may be afoot with the unusually high number of deaths occurring out of Dr. Shipman’s practice, things were overlooked that could have allowed the police to end this case sooner.…

Bronze gravestones are also worth mentioning here though, as they are also a popular choice. Whatever the choice of material, gravestone memorials need regular tending in order to maximize their durability and to keep inscriptions as legible as possible. It is also a nice way to show that you are still thinking about the person who has passed away.…

During this week, our class has went to the African Burial Ground and to Governors Island to learn about our city’s history. Before going to the African Burial Ground, we were able to read an article about it, which that was able to help me understand what this place was about and what their message was. At this place, I was able to have a better understanding of the lives of the African Americans, but more importantly I understood about the lives of them. On this trip, we were given a video to watch over there, that shows two stories one of which talked about a family of slaves, while the other talked about the discovery of these bodies under a constructing building. By going to the African Burial Ground, I was taught something that I didn’t…
