Breed’s Hill was easier to define and closer to Boston, but was soon to find out that it was vulnerable on it's left side. And the colonist was working hard to fix it. They have been up for over thirty hours, they were tired, hunger, and very thirsty. The leader of the colonist sent word out, asking for reinforcements, and he got only a few hundreds. Which was no way near enough to defend themselves. Anyways, General Howe set his troops in to capture the hill. While his soldiers were marching up the hill, the colonist was waiting for them and the order was given out “Don’t fire until you can see the whites of their eyes.” It is not certain who said it but it is a famous quote from the battle. They did this because it would cause the most effect and their ammunition was limited because the colonist did not have any more reinforcements (“Battle of Bunker Hill”). As soon as the British soldiers came into range the colonist unleashed a wall of lead on them. A lot of British soldiers died or were wounded so the soldiers retreated to the bottom of the hill. Last thing he did that was a mistake was, he thought if he marches his main force in, the colonist would not fight because of full fear of his army. Well we know that did not happen and the colonist fought back with greater force than General Howe thought they would. Also the colonist lost Joseph Warren, he was a very popular doctor that was one of the leaders in the Boston, and he would have made a big difference in the war soon to come (Ellison, “Bunker Hill”).
