During the years that I was in grade school, I experienced a fair share of both physical and mental harassment from my peers. It was not uncommon for me to get a kick to the shin, or get an insult to my character. Insults such as, “filthy jew,” “faggot,” and “dumbass,” was quite common throughout my grade school days. I felt fear, pain, and helplessness every day that school was in session. My case is not just an abnormality. Bullying is an epidemic that is destroying the lives of thousands of young people across this great nation. However, mainstream efforts to stop the bullying epidemic in schools have been put off into the backburner because of other issues plaguing American society. According to Stopbullying.gov, bullying is defined as “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance.” In addition, bullying behavior “is [oftentimes] repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time” (Home). Furthermore, bullying is typically categorized into three main types of bullying: verbal, physical, and cyberbullying. Verbal bullying is any non-physical insults, name calling, or teasing that is meant to intimidate or demean the victim. Moreover, physical bullying is any type of unwanted physical contact that is meant to cause harm or discomfort. Finally, cyberbullying is any bully-like behaviors over technology mediums that are oftentimes anonymous (Types). Bully victims oftentimes do worse in school because of a constant fear, therefore, victims education in the long run is affected. Additionally, bullying is linked with long term depression and anxiety among the victims. Therefore, instead of ignoring bullying cases, schools need to stop bullying to mitigate the negative long term
