As an educator in our schools, one of my responsibilities and goals is to assure that the learning environment for students is safe. Children should be able to attend school and not have to worry about being intimidated or fearing for their personal safety. Bullying is a problem in our schools. With the advancements in technology, bullying is now done over the internet on social media sites. Regardless whether it is cyberbullying or just bullying, we as educators need to eliminate bullying. Effective teachers need to have the skills and knowledge on what they can do to help alleviate this problem at school. Furthermore, as an active faculty, collaboration is necessary so, a plan can be in place that positively impacts students while at school.

Similarly, school districts have an anti-bullying policy in their policy books. My school is not immune from bullying. At one of my PLC meetings, I was able to collaborate with other professionals about the subject, and we did some brainstorming on what we could do as a staff on our campus. One thing we can do as a staff is survey kids regularly on whether they are being harassed or have witnessed other students being harassed. It is important to make the students feel comfortable, so they will come to an adult and let them know what is going on. Something else we can do as a staff is put suggestion boxes throughout areas of the building, where students can provide input anonymously. Teachers need the appropriate training to understand and manage social dynamics and handle aggression with clear, consistent consequences (Rodkin, 2011). President Obama noted that approximately one-third of all middle school and high school students have reported being bullied through verbal or physical assaults (Rodkin, 2011). A good place to look when it comes to training is the workshops that school districts have made available to the staff. It is a problem that all schools across America are facing. All states have anti-bullying laws in place. As a teacher leader in my school, I need to do everything I can to protect the safety and well-being of every student. I need to collaborate with other professionals to learn and share ideas, and make our school safer. I need to look for professional development opportunities such as workshops that my district offers so I can continuously educate myself on the topic of bullying. Also, I need to be aware of what is being done at the state and federal level when it comes to bullying. I know that it will take a team effort to stop bullying from happening in my school. The team must include students, teachers, administrators, parents, and members of the community. I teach because I am passionate about students.
