As an educator in our schools, one of my responsibilities and goals is to assure that the learning environment for students is safe. Children should be able to attend school and not have to worry about being intimidated or fearing for their personal safety. Bullying is a problem in our schools. With the advancements in technology, bullying is now done over the internet on social media sites. Regardless whether it is cyberbullying or just bullying, we as educators need to eliminate bullying. Effective teachers need to have the skills and knowledge on what they can do to help alleviate this problem at school. Furthermore, as an active faculty, collaboration is necessary so, a plan can be in place that positively impacts students while at school. Bullying is not new to the school system. Whether or not it is an elementary school, middle school, or high school, a type of bullying has been occurring at the different levels for a long time. What exactly is bullying? In simplistic terms, bullying involves two people, a bully or intimidator and a victim (Donegan, 2012). The abuse can come in different forms such as physical, verbal, or other means to gain a sense of superiority and power over another person (Donegan, 2012). For the longest time, bullying may have been thought of as part of growing up, but something took place in 1999, that opened the eyes of many.
