When does it stop being kids just being kids and start to become something more dangerous? Even when the line is crossed, how often does someone stand up and say something? Why doesn’t anybody help these young, helpless kids? It is time for someone to find a solution and put an end to this worldwide epidemic. Bullying has been known to cause suicide. That year, two students brought guns to school, both of whom had been identified as gifted and who had been bullied for years, killed 13 people, wounded 24 and then committed suicide (Boodman). A year later, an analysis was done by officials at the U.S. Secret Service. They found that 37 premeditated school shootings involved bullying playing a major role in more than two-thirds of the attacks. In a nation-wide study, 432 gifted students in 11 states were studied for bullying. More than two-thirds of academically talented eighth-graders say they have been bullied at school and nearly one-third of the students harbored violent thoughts as a result of their bullying (Boodman). Not only is this a problem in the United States but it is just as big of a problem in the United Kingdom as well. There are three major types of bullying. These include school bullying, hazing, and cyber bullying. School bullying is the standard humiliation at school in front of classmates. For them, the bullying is entertainment. The other students either laugh at the victim being humiliated or they are involved in humiliating the victim and find pleasure out of making somebody feel worthless. Hazing is a kind of bullying where it is often seen as a joke but can be just as harmful as any other kind of bullying. Hazing may constitute as harassment, abuse, or humiliation with requirements to perform tasks, usually as a way of initiation into a social group or sports team (Elliot). The term can refer to either physical or mental practices, in which the victims can either, be physically harmed or mentally degraded. It is an arguable matter where to draw to line between normal hazing and a simple rite of passage, and then there is a gray area where the other side passes over into sheer degrading, even harmful abuse that should not be tolerated even if accepted by the victim voluntarily (Elliot). The last form of bullying is cyber bullying. This involves bullying or harassment over the internet including social networking sites such as Myspace, Facebook, Twitter and any other website. This type of bullying has grown over the years with the media growing and younger kids have started to use the

Over all, bullying is increasing and so is the amount of suicide among teens. Kathy Shaidle’s article “In Defense of Bullying” states that bullying is good on the development of youth to strive for more. That not many adolescence kill themselves due to bullying and anti-bullying actually is just creating more bullies. This outlook on bullying is ignoring that there has been a massive increase in self-harm amongst teenagers, why teens have been resorting to self-harm, how bullying actually affects lives, and how suicide and depression have become more widespread among adolescence. The article by Kathy supports no evidence that there aren’t that many suicides because of bullying and that bullying does not pose a massive problem for the well-being of youth.…

As we become more knowledgeable on the subject of bullying, we can notice how the effects it has on both the victim and the bully can be dangerous. In his article, “Bullying”, John Greenya suggests that the connection between bullying and school violence has become a growing problem that schools aren't doing enough to prevent. He does this by first explaining that “today, bullying is widely regarded as a serious problem in the United States”, then by stating “bullying not only begets depression and suicide but also serious crime, researchers say, not to mention poor academic performance, truancy and higher dropout rates” (Greenya). Greenya finally describes how “in the past, bullying has simply been dismissed as ‘Kids will be kids,’ but the findings from this study suggest that…

For example, many students feel as if when they tease another student its funny and entertaining but its not, when you laugh at someone because they can’t afford to wear the latest clothes, that can hurt their feelings, when really they don 't know if that student can’t afford to buy clothes, like when teasing someone because they have pimples, or being too skinny or too fat. One problem that is ever evolving and continuously effects young adolescence in school is bullying. Bullying can be defined as an activity in which someone intentionally participates in either physically or emotionally harming a peer through any medium; such as words, actions, or technology. By applying this definition to the term bullying, it makes sense that almost every teenager in America can identify a time when they were bullied, when they bullied someone else, or a time when they saw a peer get harassed. And with an increase in technology use, minorities in school, and a growing LGBT group in the education system the problem is only going to get worse. There is a common misconception in the adult community as well as media that somehow…
