A parent’s responsibility is to teach his or her child positive morals, such as respect, honesty, generosity and obedience towards others. However, are parents forgetting to teach their children about the act of bullying and the effects it can cause? Reports of bullying within school environments have tremendously increased over the years. Bullying can result in physical and emotional damage to both the bully and the victim. For that reason, if the parent fails to address bullying behaviors within the child, school and state authorities should then hold the parent accountable for his or her child’s actions. “Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance” (StopBullying.gov). Some parents argue that bullying is just part of being a kid. Many people do not realize that bullying is a serious form of harassment, which can lead to negative outcomes. Because of bullying, “Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year. Over fourteen percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost seven percent have attempted it” (Bullying and Suicide). Targets of bulling may be students who are of a different race, religion, dress differently than others, have a different sexual orientation, their financial stability is lower than others, or how they act in public around their peers.
