Bullying is a serious issue that can lead to severe consequences. Most discussions about bullying tend to focus on bullying within schools and involving children. However, bullying can occur anywhere and to anyone. Although many may not be completely aware of the significance of this problem, but adults do face issues with bullying in their workplace. Workplace bullying (WPB) is defined as, “repeated and persistent negative acts toward one or more individuals, which involve a perceived power imbalance and create a hostile work environment” (Chipps, Stelmaschuk, Albert, Bernhard, & Holloman, p. 490, 2013). Numerous longitudinal studies have confirmed that experiencing long-term of bullying at work is a predictor of mental health disorders (Plopa, Plopa, & Skuzińska, 2017).
Although adults may seem as thought they are mature and capable of addressing bullying in the workplace on their own, this is false. Adults face major negative effects due to WPB. However, other studies have found no differences in gender regarding WPB (Dehue, Bolman, Völlink, and Pouwelse 2012). WPB can be considered an extreme form of social stress. Plopa et al. (2017) state bullying is a psychosocial stressor in the workplace. It is a special type of stressor, which can sometimes be unmanageable by employees who are bullied. WPB can be so stressful that after just a couple of days of bullying, victims report anxiety and depressive symptoms (Dehue et al., 2012). The mental health issues of bullying can also result in more persistent disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (Dehue et al., 2012).
