There are many reasons for bullying to still occur on nursing units. Individual, environmental, and organizational factors are some components that contribute to bullying behavior (Rocker, 2008). Individual factors include, female gender workers, drug and alcohol habits, and mental illnesses (Rocker, 2008). Environmental factors include, lack of safety measures, working with violent or hostile patients and families, and poor lighting (Rocker, 2008). Organizational factors include, understaffing, poor workgroup relationships, nursing shortage, low supervisor support and increased workload (Rocker, 2008). I have also personally noticed some older nurses “haze” newer nurses because this is what was done to them when they were a new nurse.
