I flew to the basketball court with only the thought to stop it on my mind. But when I reached the court, I faltered. I was not popular. I had no close friends, and no one to back me up if I failed. The bully was, and I knew that he would start taunting me if I spoke. But I saw his face. He was angry, scared, and resigned. He didn’t believe that anyone would help him, and he didn’t know how to help himself. While speaking was daunting, to not speak was unthinkable. So I stepped forward, looked their persecutor in the eye, and spoke just two words. “Stop it.” That’s it- it was all I had the courage to say. To his credit, the bully looked ashamed, but quickly recovered and continued with his torment. I turned and left, but as I did, Dalton walked away with me. He was my shadow for the rest of the
