Bullying in the workplace means constant abuse of a person or individuals which can be very degrading. Many times people are bullied because of how they look, disabilities they may have, or when a supervisor or manager targets someone to make them so upset they decided to quit their job (Field, 2011). Many times men are the culprits in bullying women in the workplace. Many men use their authority to torment and antagonize women in order to make themselves superior over the women. Women have done the same thing to men, but often times this trend are done by men (Wiedmer, 2010). I know years ago I use to work at our local mall and there was a young woman who worked there who came from India. Everyday this woman was tormented and teased by customers …show more content…
When a person is being bullied they are blamed for things they did not do, cursed at, humiliated in front of other co-workers and teased, they are treated like a second class citizen by being constantly yelled out in front of staff, and called vicious names that are humiliating. Sometimes they are even sexually harassed. These are all the examples of bullying that occur in the workplace (Field, 2011). The good news is there are solutions to bullying in the workplace. The first thing a company should do is set up a bully-free zone. This is setting up policies that would require disciplinary action to anyone caught being a bully to a co-worker and that includes someone in authority (Daniel, 2009). The second thing is to have meetings and encourage anyone who is being bullied or who has a grievance to talk about it so the personnel in charge can resolve the issue before it escalates. Resolving issues before it gets too bad is a good way t make sure if a person is being bullied the management can put a stop to it. No one should feel scared to come to …show more content…
Making employees feel respected and appreciated can deter the feeling of resentment. When an employee feels that upper management favors one employee over another, this can often times result in anger and hurt feelings from the employee who feels rejected by management. This resentment and anger can lead that employee to torment the one the upper management favors thus creating the bully atmosphere for the favored employee (Daniel, 2009).
