Bullying affects millions of adolescents each year. Over 160,000 teenagers skip school on a daily basis to avoid being tormented by their peers (DoSomething.org). Bullying is described as aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally causes harm for another person. It can include verbal or physical actions or other forms such as cyberbullying; when an aggressor torments an individual online. (APA.org). In many cases, bullying is unreported and the adolescent being harmed doesn’t find a way to solve the problem. They might keep the problem a secret from people that can help. Both sides have shown suicide ideation, through risk factors such as depression, poor self-esteem, negative situations outside of school and high levels of anxiety. Bullies may harm individuals in an attempt to gain their own self-esteem, or to make themselves feel stronger than the person, or people they are targeting. However, just because the bully acts out and tries to find victims doesn’t mean that everything is going fine for them, whether inside or outside school. Parents should look out for the signs mentioned earlier in their children, and if their child doesn’t feel comfortable explaining the situation to them, the parent should contact the school about the problem, where a teacher or principle can rectify the problem. However, many adolescents will not seek out the proper help from school personnel, because they feel as if they might not help, or will make matters worse, and the bully will get angrier at the victim. If the right steps are taken to solve the problem, the adult will discuss the problem with both the bully and victim, and help them talk it out, rather than scold the child, and tell them to apologize, with the possibility of making them more
