One mental health problem that some victims of bullying develop is low self esteem. Having low self-esteem can be a problem in a student’s later life. According to Ashley Strickland in her article for CNN.com “Bullying by peers has effects later in life” some students who are bullied grow up with severe mental health problems. When a victim is being bullied for a long time for his looks, he starts to think and feel as though he is not perfect. In an interview, Khay Perez spoke about how her daughter was bullied because of the way she looked. Camila, who is 11 years old, told her mom about her classmates calling her “ugly” and not wanting to be her friend. These classmates would not include Camilla in any activity they did. Words like “ugly” can make a person have low-self-esteem. If Camila had never told Khay that she was being bullied about the way she looked, Camilla would have grown up with low self-esteem. The consequences of such bullying were once limited to name-calling and occasional schoolyard fights. In the twenty-first century, however, school bullying has taken a more serious turn; some bullied students turn to violence as a solution—through suicide… (Bullying).
Victims of bullying who commit suicidal are closed minded. Some victims began to believe that their lives are ruined and there is no hope. Some Victims even feel as they are not safe anywhere and cannot count on any one, so the only thing they wish they could do is die. For example, some victims only worry about creating an identity and forming an image of themselves. When a bully comes to destroy that image that victims work hard to create, it brings low self-esteem and the victim rather take own their life.
Overall from personal experience and reading about bullying, not much has been done to prevent bullying. Bullying in school is a major problem that continues to grow. Even now some students are reporting that they were being bullied in school. Some reports could be cases that are similar to Camilla and Roberto story. Independent school districts need to find better to ways to address bullying in school, so that some victims can finally feel safe to go to
