Summer camp, after fifth grade, I witnessed someone my age being bullied. He started attending camp during the middle of the summer, and by that time most of us already had made friends. I saw that people would purposely ignore him and make fun of him behind his back. I took matters into my own hands, became good friends with him, and remain close to this day. Bullying, especially cyber bullying, is an issue in today’s society and it continues to grow with advancements in technology. Too many people just stand by and watch bullying happen. We need to be more informed and more proactive about the subject.

Nationwide, there are over 3.2 million students who are victims of bullying each year. 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying. The fact that they are missing school and missing out on valuable learning and social opportunities because they are scared to be bullied is an abomination. Seventeen percent of American students report being bullied two to three times a month or more within a school semester. As scary as those facts are, this one seems to be the worst: One in four teachers see nothing wrong with bullying and will only intervene four percent of the time. That is absolutely terrifying.
