This repeated negative action has been labeled as “bullying”. Bullying starts at an early age and get progressively worse as the bully gets older. Bullying can start as early as the age of three, when a child enters daycare. A child will began pushing, hitting and picking on other without consequences for there negative actions. That child will begin repeating their negative action on others because there were no consequences taken to correct the bullying. Bullies are viewed as one person and the victim; however a bully needs an audience, who helps them to continue the harassment and give them the sense of power. We should always look at the bully as a peer group. Faris and Felmlee noted in the article “Exposure to aggression in the peer group is associated with bullying behavior.” Bullies are usually friends with other bullies in their class or school.
In the workplace, there are also problems with bullying. The workplace bully is always a person who is an authoritative figure such as; a manager or supervisor. Faris, Flemlee states “Bullying at work consists of behaviors such as belittling the opinion of others, acts of public humiliation and intimidation, insults, isolation, overwork, and unwarranted removal of responsibility.” Workplace bullying has not been labeled as bullying; it has been put under the definition of harassment which most time can’t be …show more content…
Bullying does not only affect their victim, they affect the family of the victim and society. Bullying is costing society; parents of the victims having to take that child to seek medical attention because they have become mentally unstable whereas they cannot face going to be in the environment where they are being bullied. Then there have been cases, where the victim has not been able to cope with the bullying and has found it necessary to commit suicide. This puts a toll on the family to figure out what they could have done to prevent the death of their child. Bullying in the workplace has caused people to leave their job, without a plan or another job. These victims may become depressed, alcoholics or suicidal. Counseling is not the help people need after they have been victimized by bullies. There needs to be some kind of punishment for the bullies, to say a person is just acting out their anger is not comforting to the
