The Bully busters programmed is designed so both parties are sat down (in this case it would be Liz with a support person and the group of students that are giving her a hard time) and then the Bully buster acts as a judge and listens to both sides of the story. They are not biased or in favor of one side of the bullying so the outcome of the resolution is fair on everyone. If she did not feel confident to speak about this with one of the Bully busters contact people she could talk to her dean, guidance counsellor, any teacher or a staff member that she trusts about what has happened to her and they could pass this onto the Bully busters to solve the issue of the other students bullying her. An inclusive practice that the school could be involved in to promote positive attitudes and behaviors towards people of all sexual orientations in the school is a health committee or group that is open to all students and staff in the school. This health committee would have meetings at lunchtimes and could do presentations in assemblies to inform people that there is a wide diversity of sexual beliefs and orientation within the school community. More people are coming out as gay, lesbian and bisexual in their teenage years, very often people do not come out until they are older because of this. You most likely know people who are gay who just haven 't told you. Having talks about sexual orientations will enhance Liz 's well-being because all the other kids would understand how to accept Liz as a normal person and wouldn 't get bullied by her peers at school. Coming out as gay can be very scary and usually people who are going through this process feel very alone. Informing Tom about the strengths of the LGBTQ community can make him feel more at ease with his decision. Pointing out to Tom all the successful people in history and currently that are a part of the LGBTQ community can also help to boost his moral and help give him the extra push to come out to his family. The LQBTQ community is usually portrayed as an oppressed and suffering group, by pointing out how many role models there are in this community and how supportive this community can be, I would greatly help Tom get the courage to maybe one day be a part of this…

Sometimes, the teachers are the one’s doing the bullying. This is infuriating because I know several people that are gay and most of them are not in your face about it, they are not trying to rub the fact that they are gay in my face. They are just normal people and that is not how the world sees them. Life is really difficult for these children and it is just sad that they have to go through things such as bullying. The world today is not great by any means.…

I remember what it was like when I was young and “coming out” as a gay man, and her struggle I could empathize with. She wants to “Educate without Exploitation;” meaning that many naive people use marginalized people to learn about a group’s struggles without taking that person’s, personal struggle or feelings into consideration. 3) I went to the Global Peace film Festival and saw the movie “Puzzles” and “Orlando Strong.” The movies were about homophobia and hate that ended up in two separate violent attacks on the LGBTQ community. I was able to talk to Patty Sheehan and Beth Tura, advocates and political representatives for the LGBTQ community.…

The documentary, Bully, follows five children, from elementary school to high school, and offers an intimate viewpoint on the topic of bullying, and how it affects young children and their families. My overall reaction to this documentary was an initial feeling of sadness. Sadness for the children who have been affected by bullying in the documentary, and sadness for all of those who have been affected by bullying in their lives. This feeling soon turned into a concoction of disappointment, anger, and overall confusion. Disappointment and anger in the fact that children in today’s society feel the need to verbally and physically attack others, and disappointment in the way that bullying is handled by teachers, parents, and administration.…

I have chosen to volunteer with my Catholic Church to fulfill my hours for volunteer work this semester. After thinking long and hard about what I could do besides teach the children about their religion and help them develop their own opinions, I agreed that I should use this platform for something just as good to be spread. Together, with the church, we set up classes to teach the children about the struggles of bullying and find ways to connect their religion to the issue at hand. After throwing a couple ideas around, I decided that teaching the students about bullying could be the best idea for the children and for the community at large. Teaching about bullying would be better especially compared to a fundraiser that would not be…

1 in 4 non-heterosexual children are predicted to be bullied per year (“Gay Bullying”, 2013). Bullying among children is already a problem in schools. Now that gay and lesbian politics have become such a large part of society, the opinions and politics of life have rubbed off on children. For someone who is already fragile in their self-identity, such as someone who is trying to find out their sexual orientation or gender identity, a bully can leave lasting psychological scars and trigger the start of depression. Examples of traits and behaviors that can initiate bullying behaviors against a person are gender non-conformity and “coming out” as LGBT (“Suicidal Ideation”, 2012,…

There has been a growing general concern about school safety and the bullying of students that has resulted in important political openings. However, the political, institutional, cultural and social pressures that reproduce dominant gender and sexuality discourses sustain caution among educators—even those who believe that change is crucial (Rayside, 2014). As a result safe schools policies, public discussions and anti-bullying programs have continuously excluded the issue of homophobia (Walton, 2004). Bullying typically refers to a relation of power between one or more individuals over another with repetitive attacks that are intended to harm (Walton, 2004). However, the power of heteronormativity has largely been ignored.…

Being a part of a Human Sexuality course has definitely opened my eyes to many different topics and issues that are occurring around the world. I believe I have lived a very sheltered life after learning about some of these topics, because I hadn’t even heard of most of them. I liked to think I knew all there was to know about human sexuality simply because I understood sexual intercourse, STI`s, and using protection. But human sexuality involves much more than those three things. Three of the major topics that have made me really think about how uneducated I was in regards to human sexuality were sexual birth defects, gender identity and gender roles, and sexual assault.…

The student also informs the counselor that homophobic slurs were used and his current teachers witnessed without interaction. As a school counselor, in this situation, I would revert to the American School Counselor Association Ethical Standards for School Counselors (2016) that describes the responsibility to students to be concerned with academic and social/emotion needs of the student (ASCA, 2016). In this situation, I would report to the parents/guardians and necessary school authorities of the bullying and physical abuse that the child is experiencing. ASCA Code of ethics mandates that the counselor reports any harm being done to the child either physically or mentally, along with following applicable federal, state, and local laws (ASCA, 2016). The incidences that the child reported to the counselor are serious abuse both physically and mentally.…
