The numbers of crime rate is increasing over the years and are harsher punishments a more effective? The word harsh is viewed differently by different people and there are many meaning for it depending on its situation. Nonetheless, the word harsh also implies something that is unpleasant. Therefore,I believe that punishment such as the corporal and capital punishment are considered a harsher punishment as it inflict suffering and pain to he offender. Moreover, by definition, effectiveness means to “adequate to accomplish a purpose” or “producing the intended or expected result” (dictionary.com) However, one had to understand that the objective of punishment differ from case to case. Harsher punishment may not necessarily works or have a effective outcomes. Often rehabilitation works better than harsher punishment. Furthermore, children should be taught with the correct moral values as it would be way more effective than harsher punishment. Having correct moral values since young would allow them to differentiate the right from wrong and prevent them to go astray. For example, in Norway out of five million people, less than four thousand of it’s country’s people were thrown jail as of 2014. Norway’s system focus on rehabilitation the offender and make sure they do not re-commit the offence instead of having harsher punishment (businessinsder.sg). According to research, Norway’s system hasn't imposed death penalty since 1979 as they view rehabilitation first then hasher punishment. In addition, Norwegian attitude towards prisoners were very different from other countries, the prisoners were treated with respect and trust. According to the Attorney-General's Chambers, the general form of punishments in Singapore includes fines, caning, probation, imprisonment just to name a few. Singapore is infamous around the world for its use of corporal and capital punishment for punishment. Death penalty is considered to be one of the harsher punishment whereby it provides no chances for the criminal to mend his or her ways.
