Bullet Holes: A Short Story

Improved Essays
“Are those …bullet holes?” Chase asked, as he dug into his pocket for his truck keys. The two cousins Chase and Jason were on their first hunting expedition after Jason got back from his tour in Iraq. When the two were in high school they would come to the same place and hunt every year. As they grew older, the tradition was often pushed off because of work or family responsibilities. However this year, the men had planned the trip months in advance after a grim discussion about how they are only getting older and needed more fun things to do.
The spot where they always go is about two hours away from their hometown. This spot was far enough away from civilization to feel secluded, but not too far as to be a hassle to get to. Lack of cellphone

After walking around for a bit they decided to put their camp in a low area down by a shallow creek that flowed into a larger lake about a mile down. After about 2 hours of unloading and prepping the area they were finished. Jason decided to try to fix some food over the fire that he had built while Chase collected wood. They ate the hotdogs Jason had fixed and planned out their hunt for the morning. The decision was made to get up at 5:00 A.M. to be settled in their deer hunting spots 30 minutes before the sun came up to assure that they did not scare any deer …show more content…
Neither of the men saw any deer and the day was pretty much a bust. That evening Chase cooked some ribs that he had smoked the week prior, and Jason provided some apple cider that he had brought along. Although they had plenty to eat, they were running low on food reserves because of Chases snacking habits and were hoping to kill a deer the next morning to have a bunch of meat to take home that day.
The weekend hunt proved to be unsuccessful and the two men yielded little more than a good time; which all things considered was more than enough to the cousins who hadn’t been on a vacation in years. As Chase and Jason reached their truck their laughing slowed to a halt when Chase noticed shiny cylindrical holes in the hood of his 1991 Chevrolet pickup truck. “ Are those…bullet holes?” Chase asked Jason who was loading their gear into the bed of the truck. As Jason walked up to the front of the truck his jawline tensed.
“Judging by their size I would say either a handgun or some sort of large high-powered rifle, close range.” Jason

ALTHOUGH RESEARCH CONFIRMS that the whitetail rut takes place at almost the exact same time every year, most hunters know that the rut’s intensity varies from day to day. As much as your head spins with the mental images of scrapes, full moons, rubs, monster bucks, and rut-crazed chase scenes, the best times to be in the woods will rarely coincide with calendar anniversaries. Through years of personal experience and research gathered from other hunters, Cory Wiedel is one of the most accomplished whitetail hunters. He has taken 11 Boone and Crockett– class bucks in the past six years, and he places a priority on going after his scouted target bucks only when he recognizes that the conditions are favorable. “There are certain weather-related…

Comparison and Contrast Essay The stories “Cranes” and “The Sniper” show us the effects of war. The themes of “Cranes” and “The Sniper” are similar due to the war tearing people apart, however, they are different because in “Cranes” the compassion prevails, while in “The Sniper” survival wins over compassion. Both stories themes show us how war reduces human life to nothing and how it tears apart families and friends but that family and friends come first. We see this in “Cranes” when Songsam lets Tokchae escape into the woods.…

Rough Draft-Application Essay Ever since I was a little kid my family has been hunting and going out into the whitetail woods in hopes of getting a nice buck. I always watched my dDad come home and have a little buck in the bed of his truck and I thought how come it wasn’t like in the hunting shows where they go out and shoot a massive buck.…
