Builds Individual and Organizational Competency An effective leader must focus their efforts on building competency within themselves, their employees, and the organization at-large. The effective leader must apply a paradigm of continuous learning that “fosters deliberate practice” (Fullan, 2011, p.25), and self assessment. The idea of continuous learning is paramount to organizational success, as learning about ourselves is a full-time job, and that we literally don’t know ourselves unless we work at it”(Fullan, 2011, p.4). It is here that “The Greek expression of the self-mastery formula for life – “know thyself, control thyself, give thyself” is a magnificent sequence”(Covey, 2004, p.331). Having established one’s own credibility, demonstrated responsibility, and established culture that focuses on results and organizational competence, the leader must ensure that that the right people are in the right role (Collins, 2001). By assessing the availability of roles, and the competencies that are required of each, a leader should make appropriate personnel selections to ensure the entire teams success, in that individual’s competencies and interests match the roles for which they have been identified (Robinson, 2011). By matching interests and competencies with organizational needs, one will build a sense of connectedness to the work of each employee, as well as to the team and the goals which have been established (Hallowell, 2011). To continue this sense of connection, the leader must be consistent in the providing positive feedback and recognition as a means of building “motivation, confidence, enthusiasm, and loyalty” among the team (Hallowell, 2011, p.162).
