I work in a school district and I believe that a school is the heart of the community. It is where we meet our neighbors, where our children make friends and families gather for school activities. Fremont high school isn’t a common high school like the ones depicted in movies. Fremont high is merely a day prison for students. Students are caged by an eight-foot steel fence topped with spikes. These types of gates are rare on high school grounds, but are very common to prisons. Fremont high faces many issues and the students endured more than what should attending a high school, from quick lunch breaks to rarely any restroom supplies and teachers hardly ever showing up.…

The Lincoln Memorial "In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever. " This is written above the statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial as “an enduring symbol of unity, strength, and wisdom” (Lincoln Memorial U.S. National Park Service). Both the 16th President and the Lincoln Memorial stand for some important American concepts: democracy, freedom and equality, and unity. Henry Bacon, the architect of the Lincoln Memorial, used the Parthenon, a Greek design, as a model for the memorial (Marcovitz 18). He did this because President Lincoln defended democracy and Greece was the birthplace of democracy (Lincoln Memorial Design and Symbolism).…

My first semester at Nicholls State University has led to some major changes to me as a person. The class I had taken have had an impact whether it was positive or negative. One of the classes that all freshman must take is English 101. While enrolled in English 101, I was forced to rethink the writing process. While I had thought about writing in a different way, my personal writing style had stayed mainly the same because by the end of the year, I was still the apathetic writer who had procrastinated all throughout high school.…

English 106 was the first real college class that I ever stepped foot in, and because of that, I was extremely nervous and unsure. The English teachers at my high school always said that the papers they assigned were held to college standards, and I always did well on those assignments, but I was still unsure about this course. I expected this course to be loaded with reading and writing assignments that would make me pull all-nighters on a regular basis. After going through English 106, I realized that there were not too many assignments and that I learned a lot from each one. To me, the most salient parts of this course were the discourse community paper, the annotated bibliography, the art analysis, peer reviews, revisions, and reflections.…
