Build Me Up Buttercup: A Short Story

Decent Essays
A bubblegum pop playlist blasted through the boombox. With it, danced a pleased pair of people. It was much too loud to be in the beat up building they were in, but not enough to bother those bland neighbors. They were boasting about their best bops to each other, and after a billion songs, it turned into a dance party. Dancing until dawn, they would never be bored. This feeling of pleasure would fill their bodies until they became beat. It reminded them of what it was like to attend a school dance, except the snacks were free and there were no principals. Finally, by the time of Build Me Up Buttercup it was getting rather late. She didn’t want him to go but he insisted. He disconnected his bluetooth and packed his things before saying goodbye.

In 1976, the Swedish group ABBA ravished the world with their hit song “Dancing Queen.” Even after 30 years since its exposition at King Carl Gustaf’s ball, the song remains a favorite in dance clubs. Mixed with pop-operatic harmonies and inspiration to the dance rhythm in George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby," as well as the drumming on Dr. John's 1972 album “Dr. John's Gumbo”, ABBA is able to convey an elated feeling of limitless joy and highlights the greatest music of the disco era. Through a beautifully woven blend of uplifting, empowering lyrics and a sophisticated melody scattered with heart-tugging high notes, “Dancing Queen” celebrates the carefree innocence of youth.…

American Bandstand/Dance Craze One of the events taking place in the early 1960’s that helped shape the music business and carries on today would be the American Bandstand/Dance Craze. The American Bandstand of the 1960’s introduced new televisions shows geared towards teens, allowing them to enjoy new hit records while incorporating dance, adding another form of entertainment other than just the radio (Covach & Flory, 2015, p. 116). This is where the popularity of dance crazes enjoyed by America’s youth all began. Although I did not grow up in the 1960’s, I am familiar with Dick Clark and the television shows he hosted as well as songs such as “The Twist” that I’m sure we can all relate to no matter our age.…

Techno music (House) and MDMA would both have survived without each other, but their marriage was mutually beneficial; together they gave birth to rave culture. Rave culture started in the 1980’s, with the development of acid house, dance music and clubbing.
