Introduction
Amino acids consist of a standard structure, with the exception of proline, of an amino group and carboxylic …show more content…
The Tris Base was dissolved each time in a 125mL Erlenmeyer flask with 80mL of water. Deionized water was added to each buffer to obtain a 100mL buffer solution. The pH was recorded by a pH meter for buffer 6 and buffer 8 The effect of added acid or base was measured under various conditions. Solution mixtures were created that included: water with 0.1M HCl, water with 0.1M NaOH, 0.1M HCl with buffer 6, 0.1M HCl with buffer 8, 0.1M NaOH with buffer 6, and 0.1M NaOH with buffer 8. 20mL of water or buffer was added to 1mL of HCl or NaOH and there pH's were recorded. The effect of dilution was also measured. Buffer dilutions were made by taking 2.0mL of each buffer and adding it to 18mL of water and recording the initial pH before 1mL of HCl was added and the final pH was recorded for each buffer system. Another buffer system was made using the same parameters except for the addition of NaOH instead of HCl and the final pH of each buffer system was …show more content…
The addition of acid and base to the buffer system was analyzed under two buffer parameters, six and eight. When HCl was added to each buffer system the pH remained fairly close to the desired buffer pH number (Table 1). The same result was found when NaOH was introduced into the buffer environment in that the measured pH values were closely related to the desired buffer number (Table 1). The effect of dilution was measured to see its effect on the measured pH value. When HCl was added to each buffer capacity, there was a decrease in the measured pH values, as a result of a more acidic environment being introduced into the system (Table 2). When NaOH was added to each buffer capacity, there was an increase in the measured pH values, as a result of a more basic environment being introduced into the system (Table 2). These results made sense and showed that when an acidic environment is introduced to a system, it will lower the pH, while introducing a basic environment will increase the
