Buffalo Wild Wings: Breaking The Norm

Breaking the norm is when someone does something out of the ordinary. For example, when someone calls the wrong number I could pretend to be the person they intended to call or by eating your soup with a fork, either way I would be doing something abnormal. For my experiment I wanted to see people’s reactions to me eating dessert before the main course. In order to test this, I tried my experiment in two different settings, I had dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings with my friends and at my parents’ house with my parents and siblings. My hypothesis for Buffalo Wild Wings was that the waitress would ask me if I wanted the main course prior to my dessert and my family will and friends will question and make fun of me. I decided to start my experiment at Buffalo Wild Wings and to my surprise I didn’t get the reaction I was expecting from the waitress. I order the Loaded Ice Cream dessert and a snack size of the Boneless Honey Barbeque wings but requested the dessert first. Unlike my first attempt at acting out of the norm I accurately guessed what my family’s reactions would be. Because my mother knew what I was doing she didn’t react differently but my father and three other siblings all questioned and made jokes about me eating dessert first. Their comments were very similar to that of my friends making fun of me for having ice cream even though I work at an ice cream shop and questioning whether I was even going to eat my dinner.
