Buffalo Creek Watershed Study

To perform the study, two streams were picked from different watersheds. In Carrollton, Georgia, Buffalo Creek from the Tallapoosa in the city limits was the first river we visited. This stream was next to paved roads, apartment complexes, and was located inside a paved park; urban area. The second stream, Yellow Dirt Creek, was located off a dirt road, with little to no houses close to it; rural area. This stream was part of the Chattahoochee watershed, and is in Roopville, Georgia. It is recommended by the Department of Natural Resources that the length of the sample should be thirty times the width of stream. For both streams, the length of 100m was measured out by using a 50m open reel tape measure (Keson, OTR50M), and placing a flag at every 33.3m, dividing it into three sections for three groups. The length was chosen so that varies water flow and habitats could be studied. Each group took the same type of samples and measurements for each section to create three replicates. …show more content…
The location of the stream from development, geography, and topography was recorded. The width and vegetation growing in the riparian area was also recorded. The general flow of the stream, such as riffles, pools, and relative speed of the water flow was recorded as well. A pebble count was done at each section of the stream by using a gravelometer (Albert Scientific) by selecting one hundred random rocks across the 33.3m section by each group, totaling out to be three hundred random rocks measured altogether. The pebbles width was measured along the b-axis, and each sub reach had an average that represented the entire

Watershed Journal #2: Re-Inhabiting Taddle Creek For this week's reading journal, I read Re-Inhabiting Taddle Creek by Eduardo Sousa. This is an amazing piece of literature that describes the history of the Taddle Creek, the benefits of sustainable water usage, and the essential act of becoming and staying in tune with our specific watersheds. Ms. Sousa is highly passionate about all three of these topics and uses a high degree of persuasive language and vivid imagery to attract the reader towards her point of view. The author feels compelled to address these topics as they are important to sustainable water usage (which is the moral responsibility of every citizen on earth).…

This laboratory experiment was conducted in Greenfield Station Genesee Creek River to determine the environment’s effect on the amount of diverse biological communities in a lotic river. Shredders are macroinvertebrates that feed on coarse particle organic material (CPOM). Macroinvertebrates usually stay in the same habitat and do not migrate, which may be due to them being trapped or frequently receiving a good source of food. They are also an essential part of the freshwater ecosystem by making the water less polluted due to the organic material. Our lab group hypothesized that the number of shredders in the stream does depend on the thickness of the riparian vegetation.…

The American River is the second largest tributary to the Sacramento River, a critical component of the San Francisco Bay/Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta system. The Lower portion of the American River Watershed begins at Folsom Dam and flows about 30 miles to its confluence with the Sacramento River near downtown Sacramento. The watershed size is about 1875square miles with a watershed length of 30miles. The average annual precipitation is about 23inches. The Folsom Dam, which is within the watershed creates Folsom Lake, which provides flood protection for the Sacramento area; water supplies for irrigation, domestic, municipal, and industrial uses; hydropower; recreational opportunities; and maintenance of flows stipulated to protect fish and…

The Meramec River is located in the upper Ozark Highlands in central-eastern Missouri and spans 218 linear miles before discharging into the Mississippi River in St. Louis (Blanc 1999, Thom et al, Figure 1). This watershed is dominated by Oak-Hickory forests and karst topography; and the Meramec River follows a riffle-run pattern of stream flow (Blanc 1999, Thom et al). Before people dominated the landscape, the driving forces of nature shaped the topography and the subsequent ecosystems that evolved, leaving behind biological and geological relics from the last glacial period (Nagel, 2010). These relics are seen today in the form of outcrops, caves, and ancient species thriving in the cool crevices of this geography (Nagel, 2010). The topography…

The overall health of the Susquehanna River was pretty good. It wouldn’t be excellent, because there is always room to improve, but the overall health of the river wasn't that bad for Central Pennsylvania. The class tested the components to decide whether or not the river was a healthy or unhealthy stream.…

Stocking trout wild trout streams is extremely harmful because of the impact it has on genetic variation. There are three trout species native to Colorado; the Colorado River Cutthroat, the Greenback Cutthroat, and the Rio-Grande Cutthroat. All three of these species were a product of the Pleistocene epoch: a turbulent time when enormous glaciers covered the northern border and into the western and eastern borders of Colorado. During these glacial periods, the ice front advanced and retreated in pulses, each lasting many thousands of years. With each advance, the courses of rivers and streams were shifted from north to south.…

Apalachicola bay is located on the northwest coast of the state of Florida in the U.S. It is an important component of Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) river basin and considered to be one of the least populated and thus least polluted, pristine, and resourceful systems left in the United States. Together with Apalachicola river system, Apalachicola Bay has been recognized by the prestigious state, national and international agencies (e.g., aquatic preserve by the state of Florida in 1969, a national estuarine research reserve by NOAA in 1979, and a biosphere reserve by UNESCO) (Edmiston 2008). Apalachicola Bay receives water from a drainage network of Chattahoochee (Alabama-Georgia), Flint (Georgia), and Apalachicola (Florida) Rivers.…
