Twenge States that several couples that she knows live in apartments or commute two hours away from their home to work because that is all they can afford on one income. Twenge then goes on to say that her childless friends wonder how they will be able to stay in their homes or buy one after they have children, given that they both have to work to afford mortgage payments and the prohibitive cost of full-time daycare for an infant (which is usually about $1,000 a month or more for each kid). The Factual Jungle When Upton Sinclair wrote “The Jungle” he simply wanted a better-work environment and not for people to question what they were consuming. I believe that what Upton Sinclair wrote about the meat packing factories and the conditions of life in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s is true. Jurgis and his family lived their life similar to the actual real families in the height of this era according to Biennial Report of 1890. Even what Jurgis experienced everyday while working in Packingtown is the same environment that is described in the Harper Weekly article The President and the Meat-Packers.…

Andrew Carnegie is a philanthropist of his time, and helped shape America for the better. Although I believe this to be true, it is not a statement made without appraisal or periods of ambivalence. In researching the world’s richest man, it’s easy to see him as the good guy in his youth, as a young man, and eventually in his retirement. It was during his industrial revolution where Carnegie seemed to be beside himself as a robber baron. Still holding his core beliefs and values throughout his lifetime, if seemingly only in creed at terms, he wanted those with wealth to enfranchise others.…

This critique argues that Chris Columbus’s film ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ addresses the issues with the differing gender roles of families, by portraying the unconventional male and female roles in marriage, to express the central idea that both man and women are compulsory agents of socialization for children. Mrs. Doubtfire tells the story of a divorced father, who disguises himself as Mrs. Doubtfire, a loving, middle-aged female housekeeper, in an effort, to spend more time with his children, after the court grants his former wife the custody of his three children (Columbus, 1993). A nostalgic aura is portrayed when the father in disguise hears his family talk of his absence while he is covertly present. Succeeding this, he attempts to resolve the…

DBQ By: Zayn Khan During the Japanese Industrial Revolution in the mid-1900’s, there were many factors that came into play when thinking about the costs, and benefits of working in a silk factory. Although the benefits can be argued to be worth it, the costs outweigh them because they (the benefits) have countless downsides, the main being, hours, wages, and labor contracts.…

Whether it is religion, sexuality, race, or even music taste, people are constantly finding ways to discriminate by differentiating people from each other. One element is gender pay gap--ever since the fall of Adam and Eve, women were always proven to be insignificant compared to men. Gender pay gap plays a negative role--socially, economically, and politically. Although the gender pay gap is a widespread problem that cannot be completely eradicated, society should be giving more of an effort into taking small steps to solving the problem so the future generations could benefit from knowing what is right -- by solving one of the most unfair stigmatized elements in society.…
