Each type of essay has its own structure and target audience. It needs to get the point across through many literary devices. However, in every essay where one tries to argue a point, a topic sentence plays a major starter role for what follows it. In an essay “Bleak Future” Samantha Magaña examines the effect of budget cuts on education. Magaña starts with generalization of facts as a topic sentence which is then followed by concrete evidence and explanation to expand on in each paragraph; it makes it very effective.
“Budget cuts throughout Shasta County are affecting all educational facilities including grammar schools, high schools, and community colleges”, is one example of how Magaña starts her body paragraph. She states the problem that she will be exploring in this paragraph and goes on to support that with paraphrase: “At a rally, nearly three hundred people gathered to protest budget cuts being made to Shasta county schools. At this rally… classroom sizes were said to increase up to thirty-four students (Winters)”. It makes it clear that she is not the only one concerned with the problem that schools in her county are facing and implies that classroom sizes would impact student performance. They fit with each paragraph content perfectly with the exception of the second paragraph where she doesn’t talk about the whole idea and saves it for the third paragraph. Topic sentences for paragraph two and three are practically identical even though the ideas are somewhat different (one dealing with direct financing while the other one is government sponsored). Argument essay topic sentence is what gives the reader a glance at what to expect in the paragraph and what point the author is trying to make
