Art and music, serve as aids to introduce students to new people with related interests. With this attachment, these students are encouraged to engage in social and creative activities while feeling part of a larger community. The bonds created establish trust while developing interpersonal skills and friendships. In addition to the positive effect on students’ engagements with others, music also has intellectual benefits. One research by neurologists such as Shaw, Rauscher, Levine, etc., had the goal of “exploring the link between music and intelligence” and formed a conclusion that “music training is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically enhancing children’s abstract reasoning skills, the skills necessary for learning math and science” (Shaw). Based on statistics from 2001 off of an SAT test, “Students in music performance and appreciation scored higher on the SAT: students in performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal and 41 points higher on the math, and students in appreciation scored 63 points higher on verbal and 44 points higher on the math,” (College-Bound Seniors National Report). So in comparison to students who are not involved in music programs, these students did outstanding on their SATs. To benefit the students should be the number one priority of educators and throughout this budget cut crisis it has shown that it is not. The budget cuts aren’t the only crisis we have in the country. The crisis is our educators, who need to be informed on these benefits of art programs in schools, and students and parents need to take a stand against the distasteful education cutting occurring in schools and petition to have money allocated equally across programs to create an equality for all programs. With students and parents willfully fighting against educators, and educators becoming informed, they should opt to disperse funds equally among programs to keep the creativity and individuality alive in
