The Bean Trees, written by Barbara Kingsolver, scrutinizes southern culture, family, and the struggle of being a mother. In the film adaptation of the Stephen King novel, Thinner is a story that follows an obese, defense attorney that from the opening of the film is displaying characteristics of the typical American losing weight. He steps on the scale, which reads almost three hundred pounds, then he accepts a homemade smoothie from his supportive wife as she tracks his weight loss on their home computer. When she mentions that his weight loss has not changed over the past few weeks he responds with a justification many American’s tell themselves while on diets, that these things take time. The lawyer, Billy Halleck, proceeds to go to court where he gets a guilty mob boss cleared of attempted murder charges.…

The most prominent candy factory in The Candymakers by Wendy Mass is named Life is Sweet. This year the factory is hosting four twelve year olds to compete in the Annual New Candy Contest. From story Sonny’s blue, narrator failed to decide of a happy life, while sonny’s pursuit of happiness lead him to suffer more. They both grew up with their parents in Harlem, a place filled with agony and suffering. Discriminated by the white dominated society, their parents continued to live here, even knowing “no place safe for kids, nor nobody” (257). But the street of Harlem can be better described as hell, little boys used to steal and younger peoples were mostly becoming addicted to drugs. When the children enter the store, they are tip-toeing around and are left feeling out of place. Toni and Sugar feel as if they do not belong in the store because they cannot afford any of the items in the shop. Toni has these feelings because the store is very sophisticated and upscale, where she thinks only “uppity” individuals and whites can afford to shop.
