Some may argue that it [Buddhism] is a religion. Buddhism itself is not a religion, it is a philosophy, for it has no higher deity, no divine punishment, no divine reward or an afterlife (heaven and hell). Like many religions and philosophies, Buddhism split into different sects over time, there are various sects of Buddhism, which they would are considered religions as there are essential components of religion such as a higher deity and an afterlife.
