Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica)

Buckthorn is a large shrub or a small tree which may grow six meter in heights. Its is found in many light shaded areas also is tolerant , of many soil types from well drained sand to clay. Leaf may be a dull green / dark green color with a light green on the other side of the leaf.

Buckthorn out competes native plants for nutrients, light , and moisture and degrades the wildlife habitat. This causes many other native plants to be endangered and die , since it outcompetes many native plants. Threatening the many other area of the forest and future forests , wetlands , prairies , and other natural habitats. Buckthorn helps/contributes to erosion by shading out other plants that grow on the forest floor. Not only does it contribute erosion but also as host to other pest , for example as crown rust fungus and soybean aphid. Buckthorn increases fungus and soybean aphid , these bacteria’s don't make there own food they rely on other substances like plants and killing them. Buckthorn can serve as an overwintering host for the Asian soybean aphid it is a pest known to damage soybeans and it will spread of horticultural viruses.Buckthorn seed are easily spread by birds and other wildlife , they are very fast growing they will reproduce from seeds.

It is sold in three different nursery forms. Buckthorn was brought into North America destined on the use of an ornamental shrub and wind break. Buckthorn did have a wide spread distribution till the 1900’s, when it became very big. It isn’t as big as it was in the 1900’s it's found in hedgerows, along roadsides and on ravine slopes. After the 1900’s in 2001 it was discovered that this plant is a winter host to the soybean aphid, a new insect pest introduced into the U.S. there is still no biological controls for Buckthorns at this time, few organisms were available for study none have seen to be
