Bucket List Thesis

During my senior year of high school a majority of my graduate class became fixated on creating “The Ultimate Senior 2014 Bucket List”. They even created a Facebook page and group to get as many people as possible involved. Unlike the standard bucket list, the goal was to complete the list before graduation. Surprisingly, a large portion of the list was accomplished. My fellow high school graduates are not the only ones captivated by bucket lists. As a society we have become obsessed with the idea. Everyone seems to have one, teens, elderly people, celebrities, and maybe even you. This trend perfectly depicts our society’s interest in “getting the most out of life” and supports our ever growing desire for more than what we already have. The movie is about two men who escape from a cancer ward and are trying to complete a list of things they wanted to do before they died. Bucket lists have evolved into so much more than just a list of goals. There are entire websites, blogs, television shows, etc. dedicated to the different categories these lists entail. Despite its popularity, a bucket list should not have become such a time consuming part of society. Our Western culture thrives on discontentment. Through mass media and our everyday environment, we are assaulted with the promotion of seeking the best aspects of life. Bucket lists provide a seemingly harmless way to categorize and keep track of our desires that we believe are important. However, bucket lists tend to generate more unhappiness.
