Neglected Voices The introduction and literature review of Buck and Alexander’s (2006) article is effective and appropriate. The researchers begin by explaining how mental health research has traditionally focused on consumer outcome variables, but has only recently begun looking at the process. This means that research is now starting to look at the effect the client/worker relationship has on outcomes. As most research traditionally focuses on outcomes, there is not enough research understanding why these outcomes are what they are. They address the voices of mental ill individuals in research on these relationships that was previously lacking. Research that fills this gap, such as this one, are incredibly important to determine what makes a case manager effective for an individual by examining helpfulness, likeability, and several other factors (Buck & Alexander, 1999, p. 471). The authors effectively utilize the literature review to conceptualize the problem. It provides relatively good conceptual definitions of adult intensive case management and gives insight into what case managers do and the demographics of them. The author begins the article by stating that school social work research focuses on its effectiveness to validate itself in hopes that it will not be cut due to budgets. This is used simply to segue from the topic of research validating school social work to the real focus of the article: reducing school violence. This transition was connected poorly. The introduction and literature review becomes much more effective once Whitefield addresses the interests of social workers in reducing violence in schools in the second paragraph. The introduction would have more effective to begin the article with the second paragraph, which is about conduct-disordered behavior as a cause of school
