Bsc Honors Degree In Biomedical Research

Improved Essays
I plan on graduating next year with a BSc Honors degree in Biochemistry, First Class Standing with a Certificate in Biomedical Research.

Previously, I have always wanted to partake in the MD program at the university of Alberta. My reasons for a career in medicine were very clear from the beginning of my undergraduate degree. I have always enjoyed learning about new discoveries, advances, and technologies in the medical field that have allowed patients to partake in a better quality of life. I was also always adamant on being involved in clinical medicine due to its direct patient interaction where I could be primarily diagnosing and treating patients.

I believe that becoming a physician will be a well-fit career for me due to the fact that

During my undergraduate studies, I have been fortunate to have had life-changing experiences in 3 laboratories. I have worked in an Analytical Chemistry laboratory (Dr. Michael Serpe, University of Alberta), a Structural Biology laboratory (Dr. Michael James, University of Alberta), and a Molecular Genetics laboratory (Dr. Leah Cowen, University of Toronto). I will also be completing my 4th year thesis next year with Dr. Michael James.

These 3 long-term experiences have made me more conscious about the importance of research and has engrained me with critical thinking skills and has influence me to be more curious but skepticle when it comes to new ideas and innovations. Furthermore, my research experiences have made me think deeply about my career goals and has led me down the path of considering graduate studies in the area of biomedical research.

Conclusively, as I started looking more into careers in research and medicine, I have discovered the dual-degree MD/PhD programs that are offered by many universities across Canada, including the University of Alberta. Graduates of this programs mostly become "Physician-Scientists" where they can intergrate their knowledge in clinical medicine with their desire to perform inovative

Currently, I haven't been exposed to all fields of medicine but I can see myself enjoying Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, and Neurology. The reason these three fields are of interest to me is because I believe their is still alot to discover in these areas and I also believe these fields will continuosly produce unique technologies. For example, their is still lots to be discovered in the brain and nervous system (Neurology) and also, prosthetic limbs (Orthopedics) and synthetics organs(Internal Medicine) are fascinating research technologies that I am very intersted

When I decided I wanted to become a physician, I knew I wanted to be an osteopathic physician. Osteopathic physicians focus on the whole body when diagnosing a patient, make personal relationships with their patients, and help many underserved areas. I feel these qualities are what the medical field needs in order to progress and I want to be a part of that progression. After taking many biology and chemistry courses, I know that the body is like a machine; when one part is malfunctioning it can cause other problems to arise throughout the machine. When a patient comes in with one complaint, I think it is important to look at the body like a machine and find out exactly where the problem is stemming from and fix it.…

I want to become a physician-scientist because I want to work at the interface between basic science research, which has the power to elucidate new knowledge, and clinical medicine, which has the ability to translate scientific discoveries to a deliverable form that can directly help the patients in need. For three years, I studied the role of tumor microenvironment on breast cancer metastasis in Dr. Semenza’s laboratory at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As I studied the role of Hypoxia-inducible factor on integrin expression and subsequent cell motility, I learnt that cancer is a multi-faceted disease that consists of a web of multiple biological mechanisms as well as other arenas of science.
