The shot was close range through the skull above the ear. The gun was close enough to her head that it left gun residue on the flesh and burn impressions. It was a penetrating wound because the bullet did not have an exit wound, but the bones did shatter and the bullet remained to travel in a straight line instead of deflecting elsewhere into the skull. From the hard-contact wound observed at the autopsy, gunpowder residue left ‘tattooing’ and powder was able to be recovered and taken into evidence as well as the diameter of the gun barrel was measured from the head injury. Inside the wound track, soot and unburnt powder were also taken for evidence by cue tip to be tested later in the labs. Because the powder tattooing that was found on Thomas was a dark orange-red, the coroner determined she was alive at the time of the shooting; therefor the gunshot to the head was her cause of death. The weapon used was determined by the KBI Firearms analysis unit as a Glock pistol 10mm auto. They determined this by working with the coroner by looking at the injury, residue that was left and most importantly the bullet that was found and removed. The injury was clean and cut through all bone and organ and stopped at compact with the other side of the skull bone. The tattoo pattern as well was large and prominent signifying a handgun. The bullet was then observed under microscope next to other ammunition that was similar to handguns and made a match to a Glock
