Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Julius Caesar
In The Tragedy Of Julius Caesar, one of Shakespeare’s themes is the struggle in the characters, more specifically Brutus, between honor. The characters, most notably Brutus, all have some sort of definite struggle within themselves and they gradually become blind to what is logical because the titles they are given, giving them a “cloudy” perspective on life. The repetition of “honor” continues to pop up in mostly every scene. We are able to see this very clearly in scenes where the title of honor plays a big role in the story that not only gradually destroys people from the inside out, literally, but more specifically is targeted towards Brutus. Brutus and Cassius are talking with each other while everyone else moves on to the event that is taking place at that time. Later, Cassius hints that Brutus is an “honorable” person and he responds by saying, “Not contribute any further my neglect / than that poor Brutus, with himself at war, forgets the shows of love to other men (1.2.50-2).” Which seems to portray Brutus’s true feelings about himself.
This is an indication of not only the destructiveness of being self-absorbed, but it could tie into his obsession with honor. It would be safe to say that Brutus is someone who needs to prove himself to others by using his honor as the starting step, and through this, he isn’t able to see beyond the general people or even just the general good. Something that should've stuck out to anybody reading this passage was when Brutus exclaims this, “What means this shouting? I do fear the people / Choose Caesar for their king” (1.2.84-5). I feel as if this is really apparent as to what it shows about Brutus true character and continues to exemplify the blindness he is affected by.. What makes this scene even more interesting is the fact that Caesar is Brutus’ only good friend. But yet he is still trying to go against him as if he doesn't care for anyone else but
