Brutus Speech At The Funeral Of Ceasar

Decent Essays
Brutus and Antony gave two very distinct speeches at the funeral of Ceasar. Brutus appeals to reason and logic while Antony appeals to emotions. Brutus is more of an introvert, solitary philosopher and the speech is in total character. He goes on to explain his reason for killing Ceasar. In his opening remarks Brutus states:

Hear me for my cause, Believe me for mine honor and have respect to mine honor, that you may believe me in your wisdom and awake your senses that you may the better judge.

Antony on the other hand is more of a hedonist and extrovert. He is characterize as a man who loves pleasures of the senses. HE enjoys drinking lots of wine and liquor and is an antithetical to thinking. Brutus loves to think. HE

Brutus attempts to justify his killing of Julius Caesar using rhetorical question and antithesis while Mark Antony tries to defend Julius Caesar's legacy by using rhetorical question and apostrophe. Unlike many types of stories told today, movies, and pieces of writing. This story is hardly black and and white.…

Throughout Antony’s speech, it becomes obvious that he strives to counter what Brutus relays to the crowd before him. Brutus argues that those who assassinate Caesar, give him only what he deserves, ending with “honor for his valor; and death for his ambition” (Act III, Scene ii, line 28-29). Later, at the beginning of Antony’s speech, he makes the people question whether or not Caesar truly bleeds for his ambition. He states that, although Caesar has an opportunity to take the crown three times, he refuses; leaving the crowd and reader pondering the validity of Brutus’ previous statements since Antony adequately disproves that single statement. While challenging the crowd to oppose his explanation of Caesar’s death, Brutus queries, “Who here…
