The father of revolution is not always the man responsible for the outcome. This idea is evident in William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. While the plot to assassinate Julius Caesar; the profound leader of Ancient Rome, was orchestrated by Cassius; a highly regarded senator in Rome, he is certainly not the most responsible for the tragedy of the play. This title falls instead to Brutus; a young politician and Cassius’s brother in-law, whose hubris; like that of Odysseus, resulted in his own demise. Brutus makes many key mistakes, all of them factors to the failure of the conspiracy.…

Many people may think that Brutus killed Caesar for the safety of Rome because Brutus states,"... as I slew my best lover for the good of Rome,...". But the thing that doesn’t make a good understanding for me is how does the killing of Caesar help Rome? Brutus says that he wanted the very best hat he could give Rome, the only reason that this was said is because he felt strongly honored to be in such a great country. Brutus and Caesar may not have ever agreed on any decisions for Rome but who would and why would they kill their best friend over…

His love for Rome is greater than his love for Caesar so after hearing this, Brutus agrees to help Cassius kill Caesar because he believes Caesar is ambitious although “[he knows] no personal cause to spurn at him But for the general.” (II.i.10-11) His easily manipulative mind is twisted by Cassius’ lies which displays the hamartia Brutus possesses proving that he is the tragic hero. Brutus is persuaded enough to side with the conspirators and aid them in their plot to kill Caesar. He thinks that what he is doing is right; because it is for the people of Rome but in reality his motives were influenced by Cassius whose motive is out of…

To this, Brutus acts out to protect the people of Rome, to which he doesn’t kill Caesar for his own well-being. Towards the end of the play, Antony makes a comment about Brutus. To this, Antony makes it apparent that Brutus was very noble, whereas the other conspirators acted out of jealousy when they planned the conspiracy to kill Caesar (3.5.68-75). The distinction over the characterization of Brutus as a patriot or a betrayer is a hot topic for debate in the literary world, and as such, there are many points to be made for the depiction of Brutus as a betrayer. However, these claims are inherently based on little truth and fundamentally wrong as they are not backed by as much evidence and lack an understanding of who Brutus is as a character. Those that define Brutus as a betrayer claim that Brutus works only based off of assumptions and what other people tell him to do. In other words, he doesn’t bother to do his own research. On the contrary, this idea is flawed as Brutus deeply trusted his fellow senators and had no reason to doubt what they said.…
