The typical bruise is caused by small blood vessels bursting or completely breaking. The blood then rises up to the surface of a layer of skin, depending where the blood vessel was located. Bruises “go through an array of color changes during the healing process” (More Than Black & Blue). Included in those colors are red, blue, purple, green, and yellow (EMedicineHealth) (More Than Black & Blue) (Symptomfind.com). Initially the colors are made from the impact on the skin, bones, and tissues (EMedicineHealth) (Symptomfind.com). The red stage is caused when the blood rises to the surface of the layer of skin.
