The rise of infectious diseases that move between wildlife, livestock, and humans raises growing concerns worldwide. The rapid development of land by man has significantly reduced the habitat available for wildlife. With this development, consequently the risk of spreading infectious disease is more likely. Wildlife and their parasites do not recognize political and jurisdictional boundaries and, as a result, can affect the natural ecosystems of national parks and human health in nearby communities (White, et al., n.d.). Brucellosis is a highly contagious bacterial disease caused by various species of the genus Brucella that infects humans, domestic animals, and wildlife worldwide (Wyoming, n.d.). Brucella abortus is the only species of the Brucella that has been identified in bison (Bison bison). Brucellosis has caused the federal and state governments, as well as, the livestock industry billions of dollars in direct losses …show more content…
Birthing females often consume shed birth tissue within a few hours after calving. Additionally, bison that consume feed or water contaminated by vaginal discharges or fetal membranes may develop brucellosis (Wyoming, n.d.). The disease is transmittable to humans. Although not common, it can cause serve flu symptoms and can last for months, and possibly years (USDA, n.d.). Yellowstone bison have developed a natural immune response to brucellosis and do not typically suffer from the disease (Buffalo Field Campaign, n.d.). It is also believed that bison may have a genetic immunity to brucellosis. Essentially, some, not all, Yellowstone bison are vaccinating themselves from brucellosis, developing an immune response, and clearing the bacteria (Buffalo Field Campaign, n.d.). In cooler, moist conditions, Brucella abortus can survive for more than 100 days in the environment Wyoming,

100 Days of Horror with Bordetella Pertussis by Isabella Theamaree Fortun Bordetella pertussis is a fimbriated Gram-negative, pleomorphic, aerobic coccobacillus. It also has a surface associated microcapsule however the role of this is unknown. Bordetella species, in general, grow best at 35° to 37° C. 1 Their growth is fastidious, and this degree of fastidiousness is inversely proportional to its rate of growth.1 Among all Bordetella species, Bordetella pertussis is the most fastidious and slowest growing; this slow growth is caused by the growth inhibition caused by fatty acids, metal ions, sulfides, and peroxides.1 Furthermore, this bacteria affect humans only and it has no known animal reservoir.1 It is an extremely infectious organism that is transmitted via respiratory droplets from an infected person.3…

The bubonic plague is a disease that killed millions of Europeans in the 1300’s. There have been other outbreaks of the bubonic plague, but the European outbreak seems to be the most devastating and talked about. Most people probably don’t know the details on this disease, and it’s highly likely that today’s citizens do not worry about catching the bubonic plague. But, is a rapid plague outbreak something that people of today should worry about in the near future? I find this topic interesting because, with travel being more advanced and accessible than ever before, could it enhance and increase the spread of deadly diseases like the plague?…

Central Idea: Adopting animals and rescuing is much more beneficial than buying an animal from a pet store because you won’t be unknowingly or knowingly supporting a puppy mill, you will be saving an animal’s life, and you will feel better overall in the end about rescuing your new pet rather than buying.
