Generally seen as a patriotic song, simply because of its chorus, “Born in the U.S.A. goes deeper. The song was actually written as a narrative about veterans coming home from Viet Nam and their treatment by the government and the public upon return. Springsteen’s song has become an anthem for the working class and the complexity of their experience.

John and writing partner Bernie Taupin wrote the song for Billie Jean King and the Philadelphia Freedom tennis team in 1975. However, since the song came out just before the United States’ bicentennial celebration in 1976, it was appropriated for the event.
Number Five: ‘Living in America’ by James Brown
The first song on this list explicitly written as a patriotic song, “Living in America” came out in 1985. Used in the patriotic scenes of the fourth Rocky film, the song is a word association of everything that composers Dan Hartman and Charlie Midnight think of when they think of America, calling it the “promise land.”
Number Four: ‘America’ by Neil Diamond
From the remake of The Jazz Singer, Diamond sings about immigrants coming over to America to live out their dreams. The song ends with an interpretation of “My Country Tis of Thee,” a classic folk song. Diamond’s song and message were so popular that “America” landed at number one on the Billboard charts for three weeks in 1981.
