Bruce Springsteen: Song Analysis

Looking at Bruce Springsteen's songs and what connection they have to dimensions of wellness, I decided to investigate how they can help listeners spiritual well-being. My mom told me that he references the bible in some of his songs. I looked into it and found out that some of his songs have three topics: he talks about community as a spiritual goal, he uses biblical references, and some described his music as an American version of a liberation theory. This means that instead of thinking of Moses coming out of Egypt to help the Jews escape the Pharisees and go to the promised land, its the white working class that is trying to escape from their own Egypt (not good jobs) to the promised land (better life). I will use several songs to explain …show more content…
Bruce wrote this song in 2005 as part of his “Devils and Dust” album. The song not only describes the pain Jesus went through on the cross, but also the heartbreak of Mary losing her only son. Obviously by the title people can assume that this song is about the bible, but I think there is a deeper meaning than religion in the lyrics. “Jesus was an only son as he walked up Calvary Hill, his mother Mary walked beside him, in the path where his blood was spilled.” These lyrics describe Jesus carrying his cross up the hill before he is killed while Mary is watching. Listeners can connect to this lyric because like Jesus, we all must carry burdens and make sacrifices in our lives. “Now there’s a loss that can never be replaced.” Like Mary, we also must learn to carry on after we lost people that were important to us. My favorite part of this song is the last lyric. “Well Jesus kissed his mother’s hands, whispered Mother, still your tears, for remember the soul of the universe willed a world and it appeared.” This is a great ending to the song because it leaves a hopeful feeling that things will get better in life. I think that no matter what religion or afterlife the listener may believe in, they can feel a sense of relief for

This section in particular is sung with a great sense of urgency which conveys a sense of importance from Joseph. Joseph crafts this sense of urgency through the speed and staccato of his delivery. In addition, the urgent vocals combined with the poignant words produce a sense of sincerity and need to both Joseph and the audience. The personal yet bold lyrics drop the figurative language used in other parts of the song such as, “My skin will scream reminding me of/ Who I killed inside my dream.”…

The song ends with the encouragement that we are almost home, so persevere, we are almost home with Jesus. This truth could be displayed with the good shepherd looking for his lost sheep to return home with him (Matthew 18:12-14) or even the prodigal son returning home to his father and the father runs to him joyfully in celebration of his return home (Luke 15:20-24). This song is so…

One of the songs you speak of in your essay called “One love” by Bob Marley he says “Let’s get together and feel alright” these lyrics can make a community feel unified and feel as if there is hope for us to one day to look around and be happy in the place we are with the people around us. Unlike other songs that use such malicious words that does nothing to help the crisis of racism, downgration of women, sexualization of people and etc. Bob Marley was a famous singer and he took that to his advantage by writing “One Love’ and making a difference so people can have a sense of amalgamation. Bruce Springsteen utilized it for the benefit of people also by using it as a “healing anthem” as you stated in one of his concerts after the 9/11 attacks and by doing this he created some peace for those people who were mourning after such a wretched moment in…

Some examples are people from the past like Rodney King who was born on April 2, 1965. Rodney King was caught by the Los Angeles police after a high-speed chase on March 3, 1991. The officers pulled him out of the car and beat him brutally, while a nearby cameraman George Holliday caught it all on videotape. The police were acquitted by a predominantly white jury (Maurantonio, N. 2014). Then there’s people in the present like Walter Scott, a black man who was shot on April 4, 2015, in North Charleston, South Carolina for a non-functioning brake light.…

When in Fact, the singer thinks contrasting thoughts with this worldview., and hopes for something better. He presents these thoughts through the lyrics: “ storms on the wasteland, dark clouds on the plains again, we were born into this fight. Along with all the other biblical references, he is referring to “born” as in the term born again. The next lyrics are as follows: “ but I’m not sentimental this flesh and bones is rental and no one makes it out alive, until I die I’ll sing these songs on the shores of Babylon, still looking for a home in a world where I belong, where the weak are finally strong, where the righteous right the wrongs, I’m still looking for a home in a place where I belong. It is blatantly obvious, that Jon is singing about his ideas of what heaven will be.…

Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, and T.I.’s 2013 music video for their hit single “Blurred Lines” depicts three females in little clothing performing seemingly innocent acts that have sexual connotations while dancing around and engaging with the three well dressed men who seem to only be watching the women, which sets the tone that the women are only there to serve as eye candy for the men. The first thing the 503.3 million viewers of the “Blurred Lines” music video on Vevo saw was Thicke lying in bed with a topless model while his arm assumes a dominant position over her body almost completely blocking her from the view of the camera. While this position may be perceived as simply cuddling, in the realms of this music video that reflects…

The poem could be considered symbolic as referring to an evangelical standpoint. This poem is a reference to the Great Commission which is contained in the Bible verse Matthew 28:16-20, which states, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”. (The Holy Bible) Another symbolic reference is the comparison of the Lamb of God and the lamb or sheep in the Lords Flock. This type of symbolism can be seen in the phrase, “I a child & thou a lamb, we are called by his name.”…

It is still considered one of the best love ballads of all time; however, the song was the most overlooked track when the album, “Houses of the Holy,” was released (Ezell).
